EU to lift Syria sanctions in major policy shift

Shafaq News/ The European Union on Tuesday gave “a green light” for the full removal of economic sanctions on Syria, following an earlier decision by the United States.

Diplomatic sources reported to AFP that ambassadors from the EU's 27 member states reached a preliminary agreement on the move, which is expected to be formally announced later in the day during a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas expressed optimism ahead of the meeting, saying she hoped ministers would agree on the proposal.

The decision builds on a previous step taken in February, when the EU temporarily suspended some sanctions linked to legacy sectors under the former Syrian regime.
